Cannondale's first bicycles were produced with oversized aluminum
tubing which at that time was very unusual. There have been aluminum
bikes since the 1890's, but Cannondale produced them in a "Henry Ford"
way; aluminum for the masses. A real revolution in the bicycle industry,
before long most major manufacturers were forced into their own
aluminum production. The ST500 sold for $595.00 retail and had a mix of
components including a SR triple crank, Avocet anatomic saddle, Sun Tour's
sealed hubs and their Superbe rear derailleur and Cannondale leather handlebar
tape.
